Cieľom MKCA bolo najmä to, aby knižnica nepripomínala chladnú inštitúciu.

We are so excited to announce the opening of the Children’s Library at Concourse House, a pro-bono labor of love that will provide a safe space for reading, exploration, and learning for some very deserving and disadvantaged children. Founded in 1991, Concourse House is a Bronx-based shelter that provides housing and programming for women and young children who are transitioning out of homelessness. The library will provide a much needed space for reading, stories, and literacy programs. Just as important, it is a space for imagination and exploration for children who often don’t have books of their own. If you’d like to support this very special initiative, please look out for the benefit auction that we have organized on @paddle8, running December 4-18. It features donated works from some of the leading lights of the contemporary design and art scene. All proceeds benefit the library. MKCA is honored to be working pro-bono with Concourse House, a generous donor, and many contributions from friends, colleagues, and our community to make the library a reality. We were so honored when a generous donor approached us to design a new children’s library for families transitioning out of homelessness. Established in 1991, Concourse House is a Bronx-based shelter that serves women with young children. They work to eliminate homelessness by providing these families with safe, stable, transitional housing, coupled with a range of social services and programming to help those families make successful transitions into permanent housing. The library will be home to readings, workshops, and time for imagination and exploration for children and mothers alike. MKCA provided all design and architecture services pro-bono and led the effort to solicit additional in-kind donations from other designers, suppliers, fabricators, and contractors in service of the project. In addition, we initiated in-person and online fundraising efforts, and organized a benefit auction, hosted on @paddle8 – LIVE TODAY – featuring donated works from some of the leading lights of the contemporary design and art. We were inspired by the vision of the donor and the mission of the library to consider how our service to the project could extend beyond the typical design and coordination of the physical elements of the library, and how our relationships with the design and construction community could be instrumental toward resourcing and supporting the important work it does with a vulnerable population. We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of our community, and what it can do. Here, fabrication and general contracting by @structurenyc, a custom Wu stool by @eggcollective and an extraordinary custom carpet by @alexproba. Books supplied by @sistersuptown. Photo by @atanz

The Children’s Library at Concourse House is a space for learning, exploration, and imagination for kids transitioning out of homelessness, and who more often than not, don’t have access to their own books. We were inspired by the library and it’s mission to donate our services pro-bono and to organize a benefit auction on @paddle8 featuring beautiful, playful, and arresting donated works from some of the leading lights of contemporary art and design. We are so proud of this project and so grateful for the generosity of our friends and collaborators who have donated their work and efforts. Please check out this incredible collection of works with low or no reserve, and help us support the important work the library does with a vulnerable and deserving population of children. The Children’s Library at Concourse House transforms a dark and underused mezzanine into a bright and warm space for reading, adventures, and imagination for kids who are transitioning out of homelessness. We are so grateful for everyone who participated in the auction we organized to benefit the library on @paddle8. We raised a ton of money that will support the library for years to come. And we’ve been fortunate to have garnered a bit of press attention from @dezeen, @designmilk, @archpaper, @archdigest, @curbed, @wallpapermag, @azuremagazine, @interiordesignmag, and others. We are overwhelmed, and humbled. Special thanks to @structurenyc who fabricated and installed the library, and the designers and artists who donated work for the space and the auction. What an incredible way to end the year. Photo by @atanz

The Children’s Library at Concourse House was recognized with an honorable mention in the Institutional Interiors category of the Architect’s Newspaper’s Best of Design Awards. • A series of illuminated, rounded forms, and a dazzling and playful carpet by @alexproba make for a colorful and welcoming space for reading, stories, and exploration at Concourse a House, a shelter that serves women and young children who are transitioning out of homelessness. This project was a pro bono labor of love for our entire team (especially @bdcaldwell) and we are so grateful for the honor. Thanks to the editors and jury members, and congratulations to all of the recognized projects.

The Children’s Library at Concourse House, a Bronx-based shelter for women with young children who are transitioning out of homelessness. So wonderful to see it in the pages of @interiordesignmag this month. More in our stories. Much gratitude to @thecindygram @blockannie, and especially to our many friends, colleagues, and clients who lent support to the project through donations, auction items, and donations in kind. Special recognition to Kate and Julie Yamin who created the library program at @concourse_house and made the library happen with a major donation. We love this little pro-bono engine that could, and are super excited to be working on a new pro-bono project with @hsvsnyc, a Brooklyn-based foster care agency that works with families in crisis. More to come!
